Episode 1: KB's First Day
FADE IN:
INT. KB'S BEDROOM - MORNING
KB is in bed, fast asleep. GINA opens the door, looking cheery.
GINA
Rise and shine, KB! First day at your new school!
KB
(mutters sarcastically)
Oh joy.
GINA
Aw, come on, sweetie - you're gonna make a fresh new start!
KB rubs her eyes and sits up, grumpy.
KB
Mom, you've said that "fresh new start" thing the past three times we've moved and I had to start a new school. Why can't I just stay in Science Camp?
GINA
Because summer is over. And if you don't go to school, I'll have to return all these new clothes. Suddenly, KB is wide awake. She sits bolt upright.
KB
New clothes???
Gina smiles and throws open the closet doors.
GINA
I got you an entire fresh new wardrobe to make your fresh new start!
KB jumps out of bed and pulls out an outfits. Instantly, her smile fades. It's frilly, 80's-patterned and not at all hip. KB's face fills with horror. Gina doesn't notice.
KB
Mom, you didn't...
GINA
I know, I know, we're on a budget, but I splurged a little, 'cause my daughter deserves to look 'hip'. Now get dressed and get ready to "wow" them at school! Gina exits. KB slumps back onto her bed, crestfallen.
KB
Oh, I'll wow them alright.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - MORNING
CASSANDRA, MELANIE, MIMI AND BIBI walk to a row of LOCKERS.
CASSANDRA
Here they are -- the cool girls' lockers.
MIMI
Hey, like, how'd we get lockers all next to each other?
BIBI
Duh, Mimi. Cassandra has connections?
CASSANDRA
Stick with me, girls, and you'll always be as far from the geeks as possible. Cassandra walks O.S. Mimi and Bibi follow. Melanie stays in frame for a beat, hesitant, then follows them O.S.
CROSS TO KB as she exits the PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE , carrying books and looking nervous as she checks her schedule. She shuffles down the hall, and stops at a classroom door. KB opens the door, then takes in surprise at someone she sees...
KB'S POV OF CLASSROOM - It's a biology class, with various plants, charts and models. MR. BITTNER, the teacher, is holding up a beaker to the class.
BACK ON KB, as a smile comes to her face and she GASPS.
KB
Mr. Bittner!
RIPPLE DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. WOODSY AREA - DAY (KB'S FLASHBACK)
KB sits at a picnic table with THREE STUDIOUS KIDS, working on a project. Behind them is a big, CABIN-LIKE BUILDING with a BANNER that reads, "WELCOME TO SCIENCE CAMP". MR. BITTNER watches them work.
CLOSER - KB works with a large POTATO with a LIGHT BULB above it. She connects two wires (one from a copper strip; one from a zinc strip) to the bulb's base, causing it to LIGHT UP! Mr. Bittner smiles proudly and gives KB a "thumbs up".
DISSOLVE BACK TO:
INT. CLASSROOM - DAY (REALITY)
MR. BITTNER - looks at KB
MR. BITTNER
Well, if it isn't KB Fluffernutter!
THE STUDENTS giggle (AD LIB REACTIONS to last name).
KB snaps out of her trance and blushes.
KB
Um... it's Floofinatta?
MR. BITTNER
Oh, right...
(embarrassed chuckle)
Sorry KB, My mistake. So what brings you to my "laboratory?"
KB
Isn't this room 201?
MR. Bittner looks confused as checks a roll-call sheet.
MR. BITTNER
Hmmm... your name's not here. I think you're in the wrong homeroom.
KB checks her schedule again, suddenly embarrassed.
KB
Oops.
As KB turns to leave, she bumps into CASSANDRA. Suddenly,
CASSANDRA
(harshly)
Watch where you're going, freak!
KB
Sorry.
CASSANDRA
What are you apologizing for, your clumsiness or your 'sorry' outfit? In the b.g., Bittner overhears, But just as he opens his mouth to respond, Cassandra enters and shuts the door, cutting him off.
INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS
STAY ON KB, alone in the hallway. From behind the closed door, we hear the O.S. CLASS LAUGH at KB's expense. KB sighs, then leans against the door, now miserable.
KB
Oh, joy.
FADE OUT.
