FADE IN:
EXTERIOR SCHOOL SIDEWALK - AFTER SCHOOL
MIMI, BIBI AND MELANIE stand together, waiting for their rides. Nearby, SEVERAL OTHER KIDS are boarding a bus. (*Note: There a gnarly food stain on Mimi's shirt: EGG!)
MIMI
I so hope your mother doesn't totally forget to pick us up again, Bibi.
BIBI
Yeah - we wouldn't want to have to board the LOSER bus.
On "loser", Bibi makes an "L" sign with her thumb and forefinger held to her forehead. Mimi LAUGHS...then stops, seeing something c.
MIMI
Ew, new girl alert.
On cue, KB walks by, head hung low. Melanie, Mimi and Bibi eye her critically. When KB EXITS OFF SCREEN, they talk--
BIBI
How funny was it when Cassandra said that thing about her "sorry" outfit?!
MIMI
Like, to die for funny!
Mimi and Bibi share a LAUGH. Melanie is not laughing.
MELANIE
Actually, I thought Cassandra was being kinda harsh.
Mimi and Bibi stop giggling and look at Melanie in surprise. Melanie nervously tries to cover up her comment.
MELANIE (CONT'D)
I mean, you know, like, harsh in a funny way?
MIMI
Speaking of harsh, last night I had this total nightmare that Cassandra was a judge and she sentenced me to jail cuz of my bad outfit.
BIBI
GASP! That is SO weird! I once had a nightmare that she arrested me for bad hair!
MELANIE
Well, don't look now, Mimi, but I think your nightmare is about to come true.
MIMI
What are you talking about, Mel?
Melanie gestures towards Mimi's shirt. In unison, Mimi and Bibi see the egg stain and react in horror.
MIMI (CONT'D)
My shirt! If Cassandra sees this, I am SO out of her inner circle.
Bibi grabs Mimi by the arm and pulls her away.
BIBI
Lucky for you I'm a licensed Fashion Emergency Technician!
Bibi and Mimi rush off. Melanie rolls her eyes. Just then, RAVEN AND LASA stroll past Melanie, not looking at her. Melanie smiles hopefully at them.
MELANIE
Hey, Raven. Lasa.
The two girls stop and exchange shocked looks.
RAVEN (sarcastic and loudly)
Whoa. Am I hearing things or did Melanie just talk to us?
LASA
You're hearing things. Mel left us for "cooler" friends, remember?
Melanie frowns, looking guilty.
MELANIE
Come on, guys. You're still my friends, too.
Just then, Melanie is startled by an OFF SCREEN VOICE.
CASSANDRA (OFF SCREEN)
Melanie, who are you talking to?
Cassandra enters frame, looks at Melanie threateningly. Melanie stiffens up and turns away from Raven and Lasa.
MELANIE
Nobody.
CASSANDRA
That's right - nobodies.
RAVEN AND LASA's jaws drop, shocked. Cassandra turns to walk away, then stops and turns around, looking at Melanie.
CASSANDRA (CONT'D)
Uh, Mel? Hello? Aren't you gonna walk me to the car?
MELANIE
Oh, um, sure.
Cassandra walks O.S. Melanie hesitates, looks at Raven and Lasa guiltily for a beat, then follows Cassandra OFF SCREEN.
Raven gives Lasa a confused look.
RAVEN
Did we just go from 'friends' to 'nobodies' in two-point-five seconds?
Lasa checks her watch.
LASA
Actually, I think it was more like two seconds flat.
Raven smirks sarcastically.
FADE OUT.
