Episode 7: Soccer Tryouts
FADE IN:
EXTERIOR KB'S HOUSE - DRIVEWAY - DAY
GINA sits buckled up in her modest car, parked in the driveway. She yells out the window.
GINA
KB! Hurry - you don't want to be late for soccer tryouts!
KB runs out of the house toward the car, looking excited. She jumps in the car and buckles her seatbelt.
INTERIOR GINA'S CAR - CONTINUOUS
Gina backs out of the driveway, then accelerates down the street.
KB
Gasp! I forgot my soccer bag!
GINA
Calm down - it's in the back. I packed everything for you.
KB
Did you pack my lucky socks?
GINA
Of course!
KB breathes a SIGH of relief and smiles.
KB
Sigh. You rock, mom.
CUT TO:
INTERIOR GIRLS' LOCKER ROOM - DAY
KB sits down on a bench with her soccer bag. Other girls around her are putting on their socks and cleats. KB unzips her soccer bag and pulls out her cleats, shorts...then suddenly looks shocked. Slowly, she takes out... a pair of fuzzy, GREEN SOCKS with leprechauns on them! KB slaps her forehead.
KB
Not THESE lucky socks!
Cassandra, Mimi and Bibi stare hard at KB, who quickly hides the socks behind her back
CUT TO:
EXTERIOR SOCCER FIELD - DAY
PAN DOWN A LINE OF GIRLS dressed in soccer outfits (including KB, MELANIE, CASSANDRA, MIMI AND BIBI.) All the girls look a bit nervous as an OFF SCREEN VOICE talks.
COACH CRUNCHER (OFF SCREEN)
Listen up, girls. I don't give a growl how great of a player each one of you is, it's teamwork that matters!
Over Coach Cruncher's dialogue, Cassandra looks down at KB's socks and whispers to Mimi. Bibi amd Mimi all look down at K.B's socks and laugh. KB notices this.
ON COACH CRUNCHER - looking tough and continuing his spiel.
COACH CRUNCHER (CONT'D)
Now I expect you all to support your fellow teammates. 'Cause whatever your differences, you all share one common goal. To beat the Blazing Roadrunners! Now get out there and show me what you got!
Coach Cruncher BLOWS A WHISTLE!
CUT TO:
EXTERIOR SOCCER FIELD - MOMENTS LATER - SOCCER TRY-OUTS MONTAGE
KB, looking determined, watches as a soccer ball rolls toward her.
COACH CRUNCHER (O.S.)
Get in there girl's, lets go, go, go! It's yours, KB!
Just as she walks up to kick it, Cassandra runs into frame and steps in front of her, blocking her. Cassandra kicks the ball instead.
KB
Hey!
Cassandra runs off, ignoring her.
COACH CRUNCHER (O.S.)
Come on, KB! Be a team player!
KB - looks confused.
KB
But I am a team player, Coach. And a good one!
WIPE TO:
COACH CRUNCHER (OFF SCREEN)
Defense, defense!
EXTERIOR SOCCER FIELD - MOMENTS LATER
MIMI AND BIBI trot down the field, passing (kicking) the ball back and forth to each other.
COACH CRUNCHER (OFF-SCREEN)
Hustle! Hustle! Yeah!
MIMI and BIBI approach a GOAL, where KB stands nearby.
KB
Hey guys - I'm open - pass it to me!
Mimi and Bibi ignore her and continue kicking the ball to each other. Mimi tries to kick the ball to the goal from afar, but an OPPOSING TEAMMATE runs into frame and steals it away.
KB, right near the goal, sighs in frustration.
KB (CONT'D)
(Frustrated sigh) I could have scored.
WIPE TO:
EXTERIOR SOCCER FIELD - MOMENTS LATER
KB finally has the ball. She does some fancy footwork to move it across the field. Just as she approaches the goal, she steps back to kick it. But suddenly...
Cassandra runs up and trips her! KB falls face-first into the mud. A WHISTLE BLOWS OFF SCREEN.
Coach Cruncher steps up to KB She slowly lifts her head from the mud and looks up, looking downtrodden. He helps her up.
COACH CRUNCHER
Good try, kiddo. All you need is to muster up some more team effort.
Coach Cruncher pats KB on the back, then walks off. KB, mud still on her face, looks shocked and hurt by what he said.
KB
But, I'm actually really good!
Cassandra walks past KB, followed by Mimi, Bibi and Melanie.
CASSANDRA
Yeah, good at screwing up.
KB watches them leave, now looking furious. Glaring, she wipes the mud off her face.
FADE OUT.
