Episode 8: KB Withdraws, Melanie Gets Dissed
FADE IN:
INTERIOR MEGA STORE - DAY
ANGLE ON ROW OF DRESSING ROOM DOORS. Melanie steps out of one of the dressing rooms, wearing a sporty outfit. She strikes a pose and giggles at herself in the mirror. Suddenly, she hears A VOICE from behind the other two doors.
LASA (OFF SCREEN)
Ugh. These shorts look stupid on me.
RAVEN (OFF SCREEN)
Lemme see...
RAVEN steps out of one of the dressing rooms, wearing shorts with a tag on them. She stops, face to face with Melanie.
LASA steps out of another dressing room door. She stops and sees Melanie.
MELANIE - smiles weakly back at them.
MELANIE
Actually those shorts look nice.
Raven looks at Lasa, confused.
LASA
Who's she talking to?
RAVEN
Not us. We're 'nobodies', remember?
LASA
Oh yeah.
Raven and Lasa each go back into their individual dressing rooms and close the doors. Melanie calls after them, desperate.
MELANIE
You guys, I didn't mean it!
Resigned, Melanie slumps against the mirror, looking guilty and SIGHS.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXTERIOR SCHOOL - DAY
GINA'S CAR pulls up to the front sidewalk.
GINA
Well, I just don't understand.
KB
What's to understand?
INTERIOR GINA'S CAR - CONTINUOUS
Gina and KB sit buckled up in the car, talking. KB, wearing another mom-bought outfit, is sulking.
GINA
Why you would ever want to quit soccer. You love soccer!
KB
I just do, okay?
GINA
Is this about the lucky socks mistake?
KB
No. But how could you pack my leprechaun socks? Those are for St. Patrick's day.
GINA
I didn't know you had two different pairs.
KB
Whatever, it doesn't matter anyway.
GINA
Honey, I think if you just stick with soccer, you'll be-
KB
(frustrated sigh) Fine, Mom. I'll try it one more time.
KB grabs her books and soccer bag and gets out of the car. Gina looks baffled as she watches her walk away.
GINA'S POINT OF VIEW - THROUGH CAR WINDOW: KB walks toward the school entrance, passing CASSANDRA, MIMI, BIBI AND MELANIE. They point at her and LAUGH. KB's walk turns into a run as she goes inside.
BACK ON GINA - registering this. A sad look crosses her face as we hear the ECHOING SOUNDS OF KIDS ON A PLAYGROUND. HOLD ON GINA'S FACE as we...
DISSOLVE TO:
EXTERIOR PLAYGROUND - DAY (GINA'S FLASHBACK)
CLOSE ON a 10-YEAR-OLD GINA - the same sad look on her face. (*NOTE: This younger Gina has very frizzy hair, like a poodle's.)
WIDE OUT TO REVEAL - a GROUP OF MEAN GIRLS are skipping in a circle around Gina, pointing at her and taunting her.
MEAN GIRLS (sing-song taunting)
Poodle head; Poodle head; Poodle head... (snickers)
DISSOLVE TO:
INTERIOR GINA'S CAR - DAY (PRESENT)
CLOSE ON THE ADULT GINA, remembering, as the ECHOING VOICES FADE AWAY...
GINA (to self)
(sigh) Now I understand, KB I know just how you feel.
FADE OUT.
