Episode 9: Changes of Heart
FADE IN:
INTERIOR MILTON'S ROOM - EVENING
Milton comically tries to stuff his tuba case into his overfilled closet. Just when he finally gets the closet door closed, his mother (ADELE) and Dad (RANDALL) appear at his open door.
ADELE
Milton, dinner will be ready in half an hour.
RANDALL
Lasagna! Your favorite.
ADELE
Aren't you gonna practice your tuba before dinner?
Milton turns to his parents. The tuba and a mound of clutter fall out of the closet onto Milton.
MILTON
I'm not gonna practice.
ADELE
You're not? But you always practice an hour a night.
RANDALL
Is something wrong?
MILTON
Nothing's wrong. I just don't feel like it, OK?
RANDALL
Well, you've been practicing pretty hard. I'm sure it's OK if you take a night off.
MILTON
I'm not taking a night off! I don't wanna play the tuba anymore at all. The tuba is stupid!
Milton storms off, leaving his parents alone in the hall. OFF THEIR BAFFLED LOOKS WE WIPE TO...
EXTERIOR SCHOOLYARD - DAY
Josh listens to headphones as he walks happily to school. He struts to the music.
JOSH
(singing under his breath) Doo-da-doo-doo, Dooty-doop-doop.
EGG (O.S.)
Hey Josh!
Josh pulls off his headphones and sees Egg and Drizzy approaching. He flinches instinctively.
DRIZZY
Yo, Josh, heard you're gonna make the track team.
JOSH (unsure how to respond)
Um...yeah.
DRIZZY
I'm out for track too. Maybe we'll have a good team this year.
EGG
Yeah, see ya around, man.
Egg and Drizzy begin walking away.
JOSH
Hey, what gives?
EGG
Whadda ya mean?
JOSH
I mean, you guys used to totally pick on me.
Egg and Drizzy look a little embarrassed.
EGG
Oh, you know, that was mostly Thor.
DRIZZY
He was always just looking for someone to pick on.
EGG
He moved to a new school now.
DRIZZY
And, since we're gonna be on the same track team together, I hope you can kinda forget about us picking on you.
Josh isn't sure what to say.
JOSH
OK.
Egg and Drizzy walk away. Raven walks up to Josh.
RAVEN
What did those two want?
JOSH
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
(BEAT, THEN--)
Weird, huh?
FADE OUT.
