Episode 12: Real Friends
FADE IN:
EXTERIOR SOCCER FIELD - DAY
COACH CRUNCHER leads KB toward the GOAL.
KB
But Coach Cruncher, at my old school I played forward.
COACH CRUNCHER
No hard feelings, kiddo. It's all about teamwork!
Coach Cruncher blows his WHISTLE and yells to someone OFF SCREEN.
COACH CRUNCHER (CONT'D)
Alright, Cassandra, take your foul kick.
Cassandra smiles evilly as she steps up to the ball.
KB looks warily at Cassandra and prepares to block her kick.
Cassandra steps back a few steps, glares at KB, then runs forward and harshly kicks the ball. It flies up in the air.
IN SLOW MOTION, Melanie, Mimi and Bibi watch the ball.
KB looks scared as the ball heads right for her face. Suddenly, Melanie dives into frame and, in mid-air, "heads" the ball, blocking it from hitting KB's face!
KB looks stunned as Melanie falls onto the ground. Coach Cruncher blows his WHISTLE.
COACH CRUNCHER (CONT'D)
Well! Guess ol' Coach Cruncher was wrong about who the real team players are! Great teamwork, girls!
KB smiles humbly at Melanie.
CASSANDRA
Uh! Melanie! Why'd you do that?!
COACH CRUNCHER
Can it, Cassandra- that's poor sportsmanship.
As Cassandra fumes, Coach Cruncher helps Melanie up.
COACH CRUNCHER (CONT'D)
Melanie - let's start off the game with you as team captain. Start your picks.
All the girls watch Melanie as she looks around for her first pick. She looks at Cassandra, who is giving her a mean look. She looks at KB, who is smiling proudly at her. Finally, after hesitating for a beat...
MELANIE
Um... KB
KB smiles and trots toward Melanie. Cassandra is shocked.
CASSANDRA
That's it! Melanie, you are officially OUT of the exclusive Cassandra circle!
Melanie shrugs.
MELANIE
If you say so.
KB glances at Melanie and smiles, impressed.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. STREET NEAR SCHOOL - EVENING
KB and Melanie are walking away from school, carrying their books.
MELANIE
Hey - thanks for saving my tail when I messed up in science lab.
KB
<laughs> Aw, that was nothing compared to you saving my nose in soccer!
MELANIE
Guess we make a good team. You helped me in science; I helped you in soccer.
KB
As Coach Cruncher says,
(mimics Coach)
"It's all about teamwork!"
KB/MELANIE
<shared laughter>
Melanie notices someone up the street.
MELANIE
Hey- I want you to meet my friends.
KB withdraws, making an uneasy face.
KB
Uh, um, no thanks. I've already met them.
MELANIE
No, not THOSE friends...
(points ahead)
These friends.
ON MELANIE'S OLD FRIENDS - RAVEN AND LASA - surprised as Melanie leads KB up to them.
MELANIE (CONT'D)
KB, these are my friends, Raven and Lasa. My REAL friends.
Raven and Lasa smile at Melanie, surprised. They greet KB
RAVEN
Hey, KB What's up?
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. KB'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
KB happily bounces a soccer ball in the air with her knees (like Hakeysack). The door creaks open and Gina peeks in cautiously.
GINA
KB?
KB quickly catches the ball and hides it behind her back. Her smile turns to a straight face. She sits on her bed.
KB
Hey, Mom.
GINA
KB, I've been thinking about things, and... well, I want you to know you can always talk to me.
KB
Oh. Okay.
GINA
Or if you want, I could talk to someone at school.
KB
Um, Mom? What are you talking about?
GINA
Honey, I saw how those girls were treating you at. Nobody should be treated like that. And even though I believe in keeping your commitments, I also don't think you should have to suffer, so...
KB misunderstands and REACTS.
KB
Mom, you're not going to make me quit soccer, are you? You can't! I love soccer, remember?
Gina is perplexed.
GINA
What? Quit?! No KB, it's just--
KB
Okay, so there's a couple of bad apples on the team. There's some good ones too -- like me. And hello, in case you didn't notice, the team kinda needs me, y'know?
Gina smiles, proud of her daughter.
GINA
Yes, I...I think I do.
KB
But Mom? ...As long as we're being honest here...I'm not so crazy about some of those new outfits you bought me.
Gina smirks sheepishly.
GINA
I knew that.
KB hugs her mom as they share a laugh.
GINA/KB <laughing>
